Teaching Plan M6 U2 Project---Making a happiness handbook Liu Juan Teaching Aims: 1 To improve Ss’ reading ability by reading the two passages 2 To strengthen Ss’ teamwork spirit by working out a handbook about happiness 3 To deepen Ss’ understanding of happiness by finishing this project Teaching Aids: A computer, a projector, a blackboard and some chalk Teaching Procedures: Ⅰ Lead-in 1. Play the song “If you are happy” for the students, sing the song together with them and do some gestures following the song. 2. Self-introduction I --- A happy girl 3. Questions What can make you happy? Ⅱ Reading 1. Look at the pictures besides each passage and guess what each passage is about. Picture One: An old man--- an essay about the old man’s idea about happiness Picture Two: A young girl--- an essay about the girl’s dream of future happiness 2. Read the first essay and answer some questions on the screen. 1) Is the writer old or young? How do you know that? The writer is old. He says ‘when I was young’, implying that he is not young any more. 2) What time does the writer consider to be the happiest of his life? His days at school were the happiest of his life. 3) Why does the writer think those days were happy? He didn’t have any worries in his life and could spend all day with his friends talking about interesting things. All he had to do was go to school and his parents took care of everything important. At the weekends, he could see friends, visit his grandparents, read books and play sport. He didn’t need to think about problems at work or worry about income or how to take care of a family. In a word, he could fully enjoy himself. 3. Read the second essay and answer the T/F questions: 1) The economy will guarantee good health and happiness for all. F 2) Maybe there will even be automatic kitchens to cook instant meals for us. T 3) It’s easy to focus on being happy when you are a teenager. F 4) Thinking of the happy days gives the girl the motivation to work hard. T 4. Think about the question Why do they have different ideas about happiness? Of different ages Purpose: A summary of the two passages can help students better understand the two passages. A comparison between them can deepen students’ understanding of the theme of this period of class. Ⅲ Discussion (Pairwork) Share your happiest moment or happiest event with your partners. Ⅳ Activity (Groupwork) Step One: Everyone write down the happiest moment or happiest event discussed Tips: Choose an interesting title (e.g. A happy summer holiday) (Words or expressions: My happiest moment was…in the past /will be … in the future. Because..., childhood, future, income, experience, a secure job…) Step Two: Put the essays together and make a happiness handbook Student A: make the cover Student B: make the table of contents Student C: draw some illustrations(插图) if necessary Student D: check the essays Student E: be a time controller Student F: be a reporter(put the essays together, show the handbook to class, introduce the different titles mentioned in the handbook and read one or two essays) Step Three: Presentation Ⅴ Extension Enjoy a short beautiful passage about happiness and read it together. Happiness is something to do, something to love and something to hope for. Happiness is not having much money; it lies in the joy of achievement and in the excitement of creative efforts. Happiness comes when your work and words are of benefit to others. Although happiness is precious, it is easy to get. Try to stay happy every day! Ⅵ Song--- ‘If you are happy’ One minute before the class is over, I will play and sing the song ‘If you are happy’ for the students again. All of us will sing and do gestures together. This step is to end the class with singing and laughing and be consistent with the very beginning. So students will really experience a happy moment through this class. Ⅶ Homework Perfect the handbook after class. & Stay happy everyday!
