Until 1998 the tallest building status was essentially uncontested. Counting buildings as structures with floors throughout, New York City’s World Trade Center was the tallest including the antennas (天线), Sears Tower in Chicago excluding(不包括) the antennas. As antennas were usually excluded, Sears Tower was counted as the tallest. When Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was built, some felt that the spire (尖顶) extending to 9 meters higher than the roof of the Sears Tower. Excluding the spire, the Petronas Towers were not taller than the Sears Tower. Therefore, before the Petronas Towers were completed, there are four categories in which the “world’s tallest building” can be measured:
1. Height to the structural top (including spires, but not antennas)
2. Height to the highest occupied floor
3. Height to the top of the roof
4. Height to the top of antenna
In all of these categories, Sears Tower had held the top spot. After Petronas was built, Sears Tower became second in the first category only.
On April 20, 2004, the Taipei 101 in Taiwan was completed. The Taipei 101 leads in the first category with 508m; in the second category with an occupied floor at 438m; and in the third category with 448m. The first category was formerly held by the Petronas Twin Towers with 452m, and before that by Sears Towers with 443m. The second category was held by the Sears Tower with 435m. The third category was formerly held by the Sears Tower with 442m. The Sears Tower still leads in the fourth category with 529m, previously held by the World Trade Center until its destruction in 2001; its antenna included, it measured 536m.

The first coffee plants are said to have come from Africa on the shores of the Red Sea. Originally, coffee beans were taken as a food and not as a beverage. East African tribes would grind (把……磨成粉) the coffee cherries together, mixing the results into a paste with animal fat. Rolled into little balls, the mixture was said to give warriors much-needed energy for battle. Later, around the year 1000 AD, Ethiopians concocted (配制) a type of wine from coffee berries, fermenting (使发酵) the dried beans in water. Coffee also grew naturally on the Arabian Peninsula, and it was there, during the 11th century that coffee was first developed into a hot drink.
The cultivation (种植) of coffee began sometime in the fifteenth century, and for many centuries to follow, Yemen was the world’s primary source of coffee. The demand for coffee in the Near East was very high. The beans leaving Yemen were highly guarded. In fact, no fertile plants were allowed to leave the country. Despite the restrictions, Muslim pilgrims from across the globe during their pilgrimages to Mecca managed to smuggle coffee plants back to their homelands, and coffee crops soon took root in India.
Coffee also made its way into Europe around this time through the city of Venice, where fleets traded perfumes, teas, dyes and fabrics with Arabic merchants. The beverage eventually gained popularity with the masses. Many European merchants grew accustomed to drinking coffee overseas and brought it back with them.
By the middle of the 17th century, the Dutch dominated the world’s merchant shipping industry, and they introduced large-scale coffee cultivation to their colonies in Indonesia on the islands of Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi and Bali. Coffee arrived in Latin America several decades later, when the French brought a cutting of a coffee plant to Martinique. But when a rare plant disease spread through the coffee fields of Southeast Asia in the mid 19th century, Brazil emerged as the world’s foremost coffee producer, an honor the country still holds today.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health)—Waist circumference (腰围) in children and adolescents predicts insulin (胰岛素) resistance, a risk factor for diabetes, and this is independent of body mass index (BMI), a height to weight ratio used to determine how thin or fat an individual is, according to a report in the Journal of Pediatrics.
“Abdominal (腹部的) obesity is a health risk even though the BMI may not be very high,” Dr. Silva A. Arslanian from Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh told Reuters Health. “Physicians should be aware of this and discuss it with their patients and educate them.”
Arslanian investigated how well waist circumference reflects total fat, superficial abdominal fat and fat surrounding internal organs in youths, and whether waist circumference alone predicts insulin resistance.
The researchers found that waist circumference was an independent predictor of total body fat tissue (组织), total abdominal fat tissue, and visceral (内脏的) fat tissue, the authors report. Waist circumference was slightly, but consistently, better at predicting these conditions than the combination of waist circumference and BMI.
The results indicate that the influence of high BMI on total and abdominal fat is controlled through central obesity, measured by waist circumference. The findings also suggest that waist circumference alone predicts total and abdominal fat and metabolic (新陈代谢的) risk factors, the authors conclude.
Waist circumference may be especially useful, Arslanian added, because it requires only one measurement, whereas BMI requires weight and height measurements plus a calculation.
52. The underlined phrase “is independent of” can be replaced by _______.
A. has little to do with       B. is according to
C. is the result of        D. is devoted to
53. Which of the following is better at predicting total body fat tissue?
A. BMI.          B. Waist circumference.

D. Abdominal fat tissue.
54. Waist circumference may be especially useful because of the _______ of its measurement.
A. quickness  B. accuracy     C. simplicity     D. painlessness
55. The best title for the passage may be _______.
A. Waist circumference predicts diabetes risk in children

Dragon Boat Festival, which is one of the most important festivals for Chinese people, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar year every year. The day before that day, people often prepare a special food called rice dumpling as well as steamed glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves. On the Festival, people always have rice dumplings with their families. Furthermore, many people prefer to have incense bags on so as to keep the five poisonous things including snakes, scorpions, geckos, centipedes and spiders from doing harm to them. The most exciting moment is when so many people are watching and cheering for the Dragon Boat matches. Wherever you go, Dragon Boat Festival is held in memory of Qu Yuan, a great poet who loves his country deeply.
Dragon Boat Festival is one of the most important Cultural Heritages of our country, so it will be paid more attention to.
