The blue tits(山雀) have been inspecting the nest-box again this year. The male is the house-hunter but the female will make the final choice. He lands at the hole and turns his head to expose his white cheeks as a signal to attract the female from where she has been fed.
Among many birds that nest in holes, the male has a light-coloured patch on its plumage(鸟羽) which acts as a signal for drawing the female’s attention to a suitable nesting-place. Unlike the blue tit, the redstart(红尾鸲) may be only the male that strikingly coloured and the female is not beautiful.
A few years ago I was lucky enough to spot a pair of redstarts in action in a Walsh wood. The male was leading an interested female to holes that he had previously(先前) checked out. He sat at the entrance of each hole and put his head on to show off his white forehead, or his head in to reveal(显露) his tail.
If the female failed to react to his visual signals, the male sometimes sang for extra effect, while gliding towards her on spread wings and tail. Once the female accepts this by following the male through the hole and the displays stop, you must be at the right place at the right time to watch them.
36. How do the blue tits choose their nest?
A. They choose their nest together.
B. The male chooses their nest.
C. The house-hunter chooses their nest.
D. The female chooses their nest.
37. The writer was lucky to see _______.
A. how the male made his tricks
B. how an interested female played with the male happily
C. what the male displayed and won the female
D. that the male tried his best but failed to attract the female
38. You can spot a pair of redstarts in a Walsh wood _______.
A. at any time   B. regularly
C. in April       D. occasionally
39. The writer is most probably _______.
A. a bird expert   B. a bird-hunter
C. a bird raiser     D. a scientist

We have known for a long time that flowers of different plants open and close at different time of the day. Yet no one really understands why flowers open and close like this at particular time. The process is not as simple as we might think, as recent experiments have shown. In one experiment, flowers were kept in constant darkness. We might expect that the flowers, without any information about the time of day, did not open as they normally do. In fact they continued to open at their usual time. This suggests that they have some mysterious way of knowing the time.
Their sense of time does not depend on information from the outside world. It is, so to speak, inside them: a kind of “inner clock”. This discovery may not seem to be very important.   However, it was later found that not just plants but animals, including mankind, have this “inner clock” which controls the working of their bodies and influences their activities. Human beings, then, are also influenced by the mysterious power. Whether we wish it or not, it affects such things in our life as our need for sleep, or need for food, and our ability to concentrate(集中注意).
40. Recently an experiment was done in order to find out ______.
A. when different flowers open and close
B. if flowers have a mysterious way of knowing the time
C. how flowers are used to tell the time in the darkness
D. why flowers open and close at particular times
41. Before the experiment arrived at a conclusion, people had thought that the flowers _______.
A. would never open in constant darkness
B. would change their usual time to open
C. would continue to open at their usual time
D. would open ahead of the time when they usually did
42. That flowers have the sense of time is connected with _______.
A. sunlight   B. weak light
C. the “inner clock”    D. the information from the outside world.
43. We may conclude from the passage that if we make good use of the “inner clock”, _______.
A. we will have more energy to do our work and make our life more regular and comfortable
B. clocks or watches are no longer useful to us
C. we will be able to live as long as we wish to
D. human beings will need less sleep, less food or less movement

Recently, in the hope of earning both money and social experience, I became a door-to-door salesman.
I once read a saying, "If somebody wants something of yours, you will be treated as warmly as spring, but if they don't, you may be treated as coldly as winter." You may consider this an exaggeration(夸张), but if you are a salesman, it is clearly correct.
You would never have found it to be so true if you hadn’t been a salesman. You needn’t stand doubtful looks and unfriendly comments; you needn’t listen to something completely wrong and not say that it was quite right; you needn’t worry about being refused time after time; you needn’t always keep patience and a smile; you needn’t repeat the same sentences over and over again; you needn’t talk to somebody you dislike... I did this work for a month, then I decided to give it up. Apart from the reasons above, I found I was paying too much attention to the job and thus sacrificing my study time. The latest test result proved that my grades were getting worse.
Even worse, I hadn’t enough time to join my classmates in college activities. Sometimes I felt lonely and unhappy because of both my study and my part-time job. Now I don’t think it is worth doing such a thing for even though I was earning money, it became a great cost.
Newspapers and magazines often publish stories about excellent students who do part-time work while also keeping high scores in class. But according to my experience, part-time work can have some strong negative influence(负面影响) on study.
Most students don't view the relationship between study and work correctly. In my opinion, if it isn’t a must for financial(财政的) reason, students should be careful about taking a part-time job.
44. From the passage, we can tell that the writer is _______.
A. an unemployed man
B. a middle-school student
C. a college student
D. a door-to-door salesman
45. Which of the following words has the closest meaning to the underlined word “sacrificing”?
A. Losing  B. Wasting   C. Using   D. Getting
46. The writer thought that _______.
A. doing a part-time job was unnecessary
B. part-time jobs had good effect on study
C. it was hard for most students to deal with the relationship between study and work correctly
D. part-time jobs would be good for every college student
47. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Part-time Jobs Are Useful
B. Part-time Jobs Can Cost Dear
C. Students Shouldn’t Take Part-time Jobs
D. Part-time Jobs Are Important to Many Students

Your friends might be in Australia or maybe just down the road, but they are all just a few clicks away. Life has changed for millions of young people across the world who now make friends online. Whether you use chat rooms, QQ, MSN or ICQ, you are a member of this group.
“I don’t often talk with my parents or grandparents, but I talk a lot with my old friends on QQ,” said Fox’s Shadow, the online name used by a girl student in China. “Most of my classmates use QQ after school.”
QQ is the biggest messaging service in China. A record from Tencent, the company that developed QQ, shows that 4 million people used it one Saturday night in October.
And probably Fox’s Shadow was one of them. “I log in(登录) on Friday nights, and Saturdays or Sundays when I feel everything around me boring. I usually spend about ten hours chatting online every week,” she said. “But I never talk with strangers, especially boys or men.”
Even though she likes chatting, she is careful about making friends with strangers online. “You don’t know who you’re talking to. You should always be careful about whom you believe in online.”
Many people would like to meet offline when they feel they have got to know someone very well. Fox’s Shadow once met one of her online friends face to face. It was a girl who was a football fan like herself and they went to a football match together.
A 16-year-old boy named Bart Simon online dislikes QQ users. “I used to chat on QQ, but I found that most people were talking about foolish things,” he said. Now he chats online in English, using MSN. “I only chat online because I’ve got friends in Japan, the US and Singapore,” he said. “I want to learn more about foreign cultures. ”But he spends little time chatting on QQ as he sees it as a waste of time and money.
“If you’re really addicted to it, sometimes you can’t give your mind to your lessons,” he said. “And friends in your real life are always more important than those so-called friends you meet online.”
48. From the first paragraph, we know “...they are all just a few clicks away” means “_______”.
A. it is wonderful to see your friends face to face
B. it is popular to make friends online
C. it is possible to live much closer to your friends
D. it is easy and fast to get in touch with your friends
49. According to Fox’s Shadow, QQ is _______.
A. the biggest messaging service in the world
B. a good place to spend her time when she feels bored
C. a safe place to chat with strangers
D. the best place to make friends
50. The underlined phrase “addicted to” in the last paragraph probably means “_______”.
A. tired of something, so you want to get rid of it
B. familiar with something, so you can’t forget it
C. liking to do something so much that you don’t want to stop it
D. enjoying something so much that you want to get it
51. Which of the following is best supported by Bart Simon?
A. All the people on QQ are talking about foolish things.
B. Chatting online can save you a lot of time and money.
C. We should be careful about boys or men online.
D. We should think more of our friends in real life.

From the jagged(锯齿状的) peaks of the Himalayas to the powerful Yangtze River that flows into the Pacific, China's vast terrain(地带) and varied climate make it the sixth most biologically diverse nation on the planet.
Since 1998, The Nature Conservancy has been working in China’s northwest Yunnan Province to protect some of the amazing natural and cultural diversity unique to this country for its future generations. In cooperation with Chinese local and state government agencies, the Conservancy established the Yunnan Great Rivers Project, which protects an area about the size of West Virginia.
Did you know?
●China contains 10% of the world's total species.
●At least 15% of China's mammal species and 8% of its bird species are found nowhere else on Earth.
●Nearly 15,000 plant species are native to Yunnan Province.
●Yunnan is home to 75% of Tibetan medicinal herbs and 30 endangered species.
What is the Nature Conservancy trying to do?
Education for Sustainability(可持续性)
The Nature Conservancy recognizes that environmental education is an important element of working closely with local communities to achieve sustainable conservation results. In response, the Conservancy launched a new program called Education for Sustainability which tests the means of teaching and learning that combine conservation goals, social justice, and appropriate development and participation in a vision and mission for personal and social change.
Promoting Green Tourism
Tourism is both an environmental threat and an economic opportunity, with the potential to provide extremely needed income to northwest Yunnan. The Conservancy is working with local communities, government agencies, and tourism enterprises(企业) to develop strategies for “green” tourism which will limit the footprint of mass tourism while generating income for local people. In addition to combining tourism development and management at our five action sites, we assisted with regional marketing efforts to promote eco-tourism opportunities.

第一节:阅读表达 (共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
阅读如下短文,根据题目要求完成短文后的5个小题。
I was sure I was to be killed. I became terribly nervous. I felt in my pockets to see if there were any cigarettes, which had escaped their search. I found one and because of my shaking hands, I could barely get it to my lips. But I had no matches. They had taken those. I looked through the bars at my jailer. He didn’t make eye contact with me. I called out to him: “Have you got a light?” He looked at me, shrugged and came over to light my cigarette. As he came close and lit the match, his eyes inadvertently(无意中的) locked with mine. At that moment, I smiled. I don’t know why I did that. Perhaps it was nervousness, perhaps it was because, when you get very close, one to another, it is very hard not to smile. In any case, I smiled. In that instant, it was as though a spark jumped across the gap between our two hearts, our two human souls. I know he didn’t want to, but my smile leaped through the bars and generated a smile on his lips, too. He lit my cigarette but stayed near, looking at me directly in the eyes and continuing to smile.
I kept smiling at him, now aware of him as a person and not just a jailer. And his looking at me seemed to have a new dimension(分寸) too. “Do you have kids?” he asked. “Yes, here ,here.” I took out my wallet and nervously felt for the pictures of my family. He ,too, took out the pictures of his family and began to talk about his plans and hopes for them. My eyes  ________________. I said that I feared that I’d never see my family again, never have the chance to see them grow up. Tears came to his eyes, too. Suddenly, without another word, he unlocked my cell and silently led me out. Out of the jail, quietly and by back routed, out of town. There, at the edge of town, he released me. And without another word, he turned back toward the town.
Yes, the smile—the unaffected, unplanned, natural connection between people. I really believe that if that part of you and that part of me could recognize each other, we wouldn’t be enemies. We couldn’t have hate or envy or fear.
56. What is the best title of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words.)

57. Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?
All of a sudden, silently, the jailer opened the door and set me free of the jail.

Advertisements
Advertisements are useful to manufacturers. With their help, manufacturers can provide people with information about their new products, such as the quality and prices of their product, as well as their popularity. As a result, the goods might sell well, which, in turn, may greatly benefit the manufacturers.
Advertisements are also useful to customers. They can tell people how to get an item which is exactly to their liking at the lowest price. Without advertisements, people might have spent more time or money getting the item.
Sometimes, however, the products are not as good as what the advertisers claim them to be. So I don’t always trust advertisements. And I never buy a thing even though an advertisement says that a famous football player or a film star likes it.
